Scripture Focus
James 4:6-7 (ESV): “But he gives more grace. Therefore, it says, ‘God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.’ Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”
Devotional Thought
God calls us to live humbly before Him and others. Pride creates division and conflict in our relationships, but humility invites God’s grace and healing. When we submit ourselves to God, we gain the strength to resist the devil’s schemes and overcome the temptations of pride, anger, and selfishness.
Ephesians 5:21 teaches believers to submit to one another in reverence for Christ. This mutual submission applies in all relationships, especially within the family. Husbands are called to love their wives sacrificially, just as Christ loved the church and gave Himself up for her (Ephesians 5:25). Likewise, wives are encouraged to respect their husbands as part of a loving, godly partnership (Ephesians 5:33).
In our society, the breakdown of relationships often stems from a failure to submit to God’s Word. When men neglect their responsibilities as spiritual leaders and husbands or when pride dominates our decisions, conflict is inevitable. By contrast, Christ-centered humility builds strong, lasting relationships.
Practical Application
Pursue Humility Before God: Spend time daily in prayer, acknowledging your need for God’s guidance and strength. Reflect on scriptures that highlight humility, such as Philippians 2:3-4: “Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves.”
Lead and Love Sacrificially: As a husband or future husband, love your wife sacrificially, just as Christ loved the church (Ephesians 5:25). This means putting her needs above your own and leading with kindness and patience. Practice forgiveness and grace in your relationships, remembering that God has shown these to you (Colossians 3:12-14).
Submit to God’s Word: Regularly read and apply Scripture to your life. True submission to God requires obedience to His Word. Allow God’s Word to shape your character, thoughts, and actions. Consider memorizing verses that speak of humility and submission (e.g., James 4:10, Matthew 23:12).
Reflection
Ask yourself: “In what areas of my life am I resisting God’s authority? How can I better submit to His will and show humility in my relationships?”
