Devotional – Pride Leads to Destruction

by

Scripture Focus

2 Chronicles 26:16 (ESV): “But when he (King Uzziah) was strong, his heart was lifted up to his destruction. For he transgressed against the Lord his God and entered the temple of the Lord to burn incense on the altar of incense.”

Devotional Thought

Pride can be a subtle but destructive force in our lives. King Uzziah, like all faithful kings of Judah, was expected to rule in submission to God’s authority. He reigned successfully over Judah for fifty-two years, and as long as he sought the Lord, God made him prosper (2 Chronicles 26:4–5). However, Uzziah’s success led to pride, which caused him to sin by usurping the priestly duty of burning incense, an act reserved exclusively for the descendants of Aaron (Exodus 30:7–8).

Uzziah’s pride mirrors Nebuchadnezzar’s downfall in Daniel 4:30–37. When Nebuchadnezzar boasted about his own greatness, God humbled him by turning him into a beast until he repented and acknowledged God’s sovereignty. Just like Nebuchadnezzar, King Uzziah’s pride led to his downfall, resulting in leprosy and separation from his kingdom until his death (2 Chronicles 26:19–21).

Scripture repeatedly warns against pride and emphasizes humility before God. Proverbs 16:18 (ESV) declares, “Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.” James 4:6 states, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” When we exalt ourselves, God will humble us, but when we humble ourselves, He will lift us up (James 4:10).

Practical Application

Acknowledge God’s Blessings – Recognize that everything you have is a gift from God. Spend time in prayer thanking Him for His provision, protection, and guidance. “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights” (James 1:17).

Cultivate Humility – Deliberately humble yourself by serving others, seeking accountability, and remembering that all your abilities are from God. “Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you” (James 4:10).

Repent of Pride – If you notice areas where pride has taken root, confess them to God. “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9). Pray for a heart that seeks His glory above all else.

Reflection

Are there areas in your life where pride has crept in? Have you been tempted to take credit for what God has blessed you with? Like King Uzziah, we must remember that success and strength are gifts from God, not personal achievements. Take a moment to repent of any prideful attitudes and renew your commitment to live humbly before God.
