Devotional – Counterintuitive Love

by

Scripture Focus

Matthew 5:48 (ESV): “You therefore must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.”

Devotional Thought

God alone embodies perfect love according to the Beatitudes. As humans, our love is often limited by selfishness, pride, and fear. However, Jesus commands us to love beyond our natural inclinations, modeling the radical, self-sacrificial love of God.

Matthew 5:44 (ESV) states, “But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.” This teaching is not optional but a command from Jesus, emphasizing that His followers must strive to imitate the Father’s perfect love. Loving our enemies is counterintuitive to human nature but is necessary for living according to God’s will.

Jesus demonstrated this love through His sacrificial death on the cross, offering forgiveness and salvation to humanity even when we were undeserving (Romans 5:8). The command to love others, including enemies, reflects God’s own perfect love and sets believers apart from the world.

The Apostle John underscores this point in 1 John 4:20–21 (ESV): “If anyone says, ‘I love God,’ and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen. And this commandment we have from him: whoever loves God must also love his brother.” Love is the true measure of a faithful disciple of Christ.

The Church of Christ teaches that Christians are called to live according to the teachings of Christ as presented in the Scriptures. Loving one’s enemies is not a suggestion, but an essential part of living a faithful, obedient life before God.

Practical Application

Embrace Humility – Acknowledge that loving your enemies requires God’s strength. Pray for humility and a heart that desires to reflect Christ’s love even toward those who mistreat you. “Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you” (James 4:10).

Forgive Freely – Just as God forgave you, choose to forgive those who have wronged you. Release bitterness and seek reconciliation where possible (Colossians 3:13). Jesus emphasized forgiveness in Matthew 6:14–15, teaching that God’s forgiveness is conditional upon our willingness to forgive others.

Pray for Others – Follow Jesus’ example by praying for those who persecute or hurt you. Ask God to change their hearts and yours, and to help you love them with His unconditional love. “Pray without ceasing” (1 Thessalonians 5:17).

Reflection

Is your love for others conditional, based on how they treat you? How can you better demonstrate God’s love by showing kindness to those who do not deserve it? Jesus calls us to a higher standard of love—one that reflects His own perfection. As you pray and seek His guidance, trust Him to help you grow in this area.
